KryKey Web Radio #IPhone #app – Review

KryKey IPhone App

Technology is shrinking. We are moving into areas through mobile technology that would have been unenvisaged 20 years ago. Devices bring us together on the move and we share photos, music, film, like never before. The disruptive web radio technology, that is #KryKey, now brings web radio to your pocket, with the release of its eagerly anticipated mobile app. Having just purchased a new #IPhone, I decided to surf over to the Apple App Store and test out what KryKey’s app brings to the table. It’s nice and easy to get hold of this FREE app from the Apple App store… Just a quick search of ‘KryKey’ will list the Premium app for free download and installation time is fast. The app is pretty much streamlined and for the data it handles, works very efficiently. The app builds on the successful web-based platform of http://KryKey.com and brings web radio to your fingertips. The first noticeable thing about the KryKey app is the design. It is structured to look like a traditional radio, with easy to use dials, all app-subscribing radio stations being allocated their own digital frequency, with plenty of space available at present to allow for company growth. Obviously, listeners and app users will remember the frequencies of their favourite KryKey radio stations and be able to simply whirl the dial to quickly tap between shows, in the same manner in which one used to flick through a car radio. There’s an initial sign up to the app which requires a simple email address and some locational information, to tailor the app to your needs. This is non-essential though and the app will function anonymously, if required. You have the pre-mentioned dial, for simplicity, though for the first few uses of app, it might be more advisable to use the search features to get to know the network a bit better. The preset dials can be customised for easy browsing, like any standard, traditional radio. The search features allow radio stations to be navigated by various subdivisions: Music genre, Radio Name, City or wider, by country. The app is only available for broadcast for KryKey Premium stations, that pay the $30 or so monthly fee for the new service. KryKey used to have over 60000 personal radio stations and since the streamlining of the business, ahead of app release, most of the dross has been culled and only the…

Tribute To The Loft

I Can’t Take The Power

off shore

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCouhOXywU4] Here’s a nice, happy piano house track from the early nineties: Off Shore – I Can’t Take The Power – When I’m not mental healthing I really do love listening to house music and find it truly enlightening… I love the catchy lyrics to this underground hit record because I really ‘CAN’T TAKE THE POWER!’

Happy Pills

younger brother happy pills

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-6iM7HHRk8] Well, some might argue that mental health meds are happy pills, certainly those dull enough to accept the marketing nonsense dished out by anti-depressant manufacturers… I’d say it’s more like suicide-in-a-box… Whatever floats your boat, Younger Brother certainly enjoy their ‘Happy Pills’. They’re a great band incidentally: An offshoot from Shpongle – and all their music will make your spine tingle with or without pills. More Younger Brother: http://www.last.fm/music/Younger+Brother

Anaesthetic

anaesthetist

I’m going to re-kick off one of my favourite parts of End Of Terror, as its reincarnation surfaces; the #EoTVib – with one of my own productions that I made in a post Christmas holiday post-mental hospital haze… Here is Wez G – Anaesthetic The lazy techno beats reminded me of proper doctors in proper operating theatres who do real medical work (unlike charlatan psychiatrists). There’s like an electronic pulsing of an anaesthetized patient, undergoing a medical operation… The samples and vox are weird as are the fx and music overall… I think it’s an original piece of music and although I’ve categorised it as techno it is more experimental and I think a piece of sound art…. Either you’ll like it or hate it…. Either way I hope you feel / don’t feel it…. Anaesthetic – it does / doesn’t wear off… More Wez G: http://djwezg.com

NEW: The Shuffle Show with Wez G – Xpress Radio – Saturdays/Sundays Midnight -1am

xpress logo

The Shuffle Show is a specialist Dance Music show on Xpress Radio, airing 12am – 1am Sundays (late Saturday night). XPress Radio is the award-winning Cardiff University radio station. I have recently gone back to my studies as a full-time Translation student at Cardiff. I thought that while I was there that I would try to keep the music at a minimum but I couldn’t resist going along to check out a few societies. I went to the Xpress radio meeting and couldn’t believe that there were about 150 people in attendance. I’ve worked in radio for many years, in particular with KryKey (web radio), and I felt that traditional radio was dying or dead, a forgotten medium in the world of podcasts and technology. When I originally went to UCL about twenty years ago, their radio station, Rare FM, was far more rudimentary…. I felt filled with hope about Xpress and, with my new partner-in-crime, Brummie Todd, we decided to put plans into place for a new show. I’ve been dabbling around recently with the Wez G Sessions. This was a ‘traditional style’ radio broadcast, with talking (a broadcast skill I am really no good at!). I aimed, with the Wez G sessions, just to raise my basic skill levels, work with Ableton in a set format, and to provide decent content in bulk for the KryKey network and also for the Caldicot Community Radio station which I was in talks with the council about resurrecting. The Wez G sessions was never a really serious project, though I have enjoyed making it so far, and love listening myself… I haven’t gone hell-for-leather on promoting it (just yet!) and am hoping that people will eventually start tuning in of their own, natural, accord. The Wez G Sessions have been good practice for a potential Xpress show so I thought I would kick on and try and grab a primetime slot, and bring my music to a new, youthful student audience. Todd and I went in for an interview and I rather arrogantly expected us to be given a show as a matter of formality. At the initial session, when they were showing us how to use decks, I was the only person with actual DJ experience. In January 2015 it will be twenty years of my professional DJ career. Surely a show on Xpress would be a breeze? Unfortunately for Todd and…
