Hexstatic – Master View – Album Review I don’t have huge knowledge of Ninja Tune music – in general it’s all very good, if it might somewhat appeal to the musically snobbish…. Hexstatic stand out above the crowd.., enough to spur me to write this article… I read from their last.fm page that they were ‘electro’ which put me off – but think not cheesy hands in your air stuff – more towards the better end of Daft Punk, with some nice mellow breaks added. It has elements of funk with some lovely samples… This album, Master View, flows nicely and is very listenable. I’d say the music would work on a dancefloor but to me it’s more geared to chilling in the home…By the time you reach ‘Perfect Bird’ on the album you might be expecting an album of trip-hop like breaks and electro… This track really stands out, however, and in my eyes is the best song on the album… At this point, I decided to take note of Hexstatic as artists…The vocals on Perfect Bird are sweet… Lovely chilled melodies and certainly, from a DJ’s point of view, a very playable track, especially with summer coming up. I’d give the album a solid 8.5/10 … It is a good piece of music and I endorse it. Go out and buy it! http://lastweek.fm/wezg/reviews/hexstatic-master-view http://www.last.fm/user/wezg/journal/2011/04/22/4cdvrt_hexstatic_-_master_view_-_album_review

Thatcher Thatcher, Freedom Snatcher, 22/08/2010

This article is inspired by a bad dream that has just woken me up at 0740am. ‘Without a doubt, princes become great when they overcome difficulties and obstacles that are imposed upon them; and therefore fortune, especially when she wishes to increase the reputation of a new prince, who has a greater need to acquire prestige than a hereditary prince does, creates enemies for him and has them take action against him so that he will have the chance to overcome them and to climb higher up the ladder his enemies have brought him. Therefore many judge that a wise prince must, whenever he has the occasion, foster with cunning some hostility so that in stamping it out his greatness will increase as a result.’ Niccolò Machiavelli (in The Prince) Politics according to Machiavelli is an evil and ruthless game of cunning and to be honest is something which I do not relish. I find it boring and full of wicked people. Every so often in life, however, we are dealt a strange twist of fate and end up staring straight down the barrel at the perils of the political system created by our masters. I write this article as a moment of inspiration, though with a touch of antecedent clairvoyance and inevitability. The time is now and while the IRON LADY still lives on and is yet to draw her last breath I thought I’d pencil some thoughts into print. Margaret Thatcher is a name one associates with British politics at the very least. A striking figure who cut the world stage at an exciting time of history, of that there is no doubt, but here are some of my words that I wish to get published to my blog all ready to be posted at the time of her death as the world readies itself for public outpourings of grief, mingled with images of torn bodies of victims of the Falklands conflict and the strikes of brutalised South Wales miners. I grew up in South Wales though was too young to appreciate what was happening during the miners’ strike. However, my earliest memories of politics came to me at playgroup when a woman announced that free milk was being stopped for all children and that when we went onto infants school we would no longer qualify for a nice cold jar of white midmorning. The Korovo Milkbar’s playground…

Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge – Beauty and the Beast?

Last week the trial began of Comrade Duch, one of five former Khmer Rouge senior personnel to go before a special UN-led war crimes tribunal, investigating the atrocities that were committed in Cambodia during the 1970s. I have studied Cambodia in depth and find it a very interesting subject so I thought it opportune to include an article in the blog. The ancient Angkor kingdom prospered much during the Middle Ages and leaves us remnants today of a magnificent Khmer civilization which was highly advanced and produced some of the greatest architecture ever known to our planet. The highlight of this culture can be seen in the magnificence of Angkor Wat which is one of the most architecturally precise monuments of all time and lies locked away in the Cambodian jungle. During the 1970s, when the US was fighting the North Vietnamese, neighbouring Cambodia became involved in the conflict. As a result of Cambodian government policies at the time, the US were carpet bombing much of the country. The King of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk, sided with the political opposition in an attempt to save his country from peril. With massive rural support the Khmer Rouge army, led by Pol Pot, entered the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh on 17th April 1975, and seized control of the state. What followed in Cambodia is one of the most startling incidents in human history and resulted in the deaths of approximately 2 million people out of a population of 7.3 million. The Khmer Rouge were communists and had developed their political theories through the study of marxism in foreign universities. Most of the Khmer Rouge leadership had in fact studied in Paris, the capital of the former colonial masters of French IndoChina. Pol Pot, however, the regime’s leader had remained in Cambodia where he had built up his armed forces to a position whereby they were able to seize power. The Khmer Rouge had developed a version of Marxism loosely based on that of Chairman Mao, who had successfully swept his Red Army into power in China in very recent memory. The Khmer Rouge declared Cambodia as the People’s Republic of Kampuchea and set about instantly imposing their political ideals. Under the guise of protecting the people from the ongoing carpet bombing by the Americans, the Khmer Rouge forcibly removed the entire population of Phnom Penh, and indeed the other major cities, into the…

Internet Car Radio

Radio is a technology that since the advent of television, has had to compete in people’s homes as the medium of choice. The advantages of radio over television is that it requires not as much attention from the listener. That is not to say that radio is a less-engaging medium. Even in today’s world of interactive television phoneins, radio still has a much better audience participation, allowing listeners to directly feed into the broadcasts. Radio is popular when people are multitasking, for example on the factory floor. By far the most popular use of radio today is when people are on the road. Car radio is a massive market and our roads are full of radio listeners. Hop into your car and tuning in to radio is as much a priority as putting the keys in the ignition. New developers have seized the opportunity to take control of the car radio market share and reinvent the way we listen. New technologies are fresh on the market allowing car radio users to tune into the World Wide Web for internet radio broadcasts. The diversity of choice is incredible and there are no broadcast limits to internet radio ranges. The motorways will be full of people tapping into stations from across the world. It is an exciting time for car radio listeners. The first company to introduce the new technology was Blaupunkt. Driven by Miroamer roaming software, Blaupunkt internet radio sytems allow the permanent installation of a web car radio, eliminating the need for fiddly plug and play systems that may have previously existed. A car user wants to just hop in and drive off, not spend ages configuring his wireless laptop or Bluetooth, in order to tunein to radio. The product showcased at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. In addition to allowing the user to tunein to the 10s of 1000s of internet radio stations currently available, the technology presents users with the facility to still also use FM and AM transmissions. The Miroamer technology involved accesses the internet via standing mobile internet connections. It is initially available to consumers on a monthly subscription basis at a price of around $30-$40 a month. Obviously there may be some problems with the access to mobile connections as the signal isn’t constant but as time progresses the growth of mobile internet should ensure a constant signal, in a similar vein…

Haircut?

I’ve had long hair for a number of years now. I last cut it all off with a samurai sword and have let it grow back to at least shoulder length. Anyway, 31 now and the pressure on my hairline from a ponytail means I’m at risk of going bald. I’m trying to be a bit more sensible these days so time for a change and I’m going to abandon my hippy look for a traditional short back and sides. Sad to see it go but the hairdresser is here now and I’ll use the old hair for a nest for my hamsters.

Chinese Military and Alien Abduction

I recently read an excellent website which compelled me to write to the author the first written account of my experience. I wish to share my experience on these boards. The guy’s website is as follows:http://www.drboylan.com/milabs.html I read your website about fake alien abductions and felt compelled to write to you detailing my experiences. I live in South Wales in Caldicot and since 1997 have had a major involvment with my local psychiatric services. I believe that I am a shaman and have had some very unexplainable experiences happen to me on a mental and spiritual level. On 31st March this year I was admitted under section 3 of the British mental Health Act to a local mental hospital where I was forcibly treated for twelve weeks. This was the seventh time I have been forcibly detained and treated. A couple of days prior to my admission I found an unexplainable brown blob in my hamster’s cage and decided to evacuate my vicinity. I fled into the local countryside and following the route of a local Roman wall I sent a telepathic message for help, specifically directed to the Chinese government who I believed would be most suitably equipped to deal with the ecological disaster I believed was looming in my local area. I had been studying the Chinese language at a local university during the previous six months. I ended up on a hill in some woodland right on the edge of a ‘now disused’ US army base, located in the next village, Caerwent. I lay on the forest floor and calmed myself down. I had been at a jog to reach the spot and was fairly distressed. There was a light drizzle and the weather was cold. It was approximately 4pm. When I arose from my lay down a sphinx-like artificial bright yellow light appeared just down the hill from where I was in the direction of the nearby house. I moved up the hill away from the light. I say sphinx-like as the yellow image seemed to have a humanoid head and was elongated. Towards the top of the hill and there were plenty of brambles. As I reached the top and continued moving a dark figure suddenly appeared and a metal military type fence was closed on me thus blocking my way. I froze and all of a sudden it seemed as though I was surrounded…

The Wheel of Time

Well – I thought I’d surprise you here, if you happen to be reading the Wez G blog. I’m not a man who’s just about football and house music. I try and vary my interests greatly and have a thirst for devouring knowledge across the board… I was up late on the weekend DJing and it takes a while to get your sleep patterns back into normality.>> People may see this as a disadvantage, but personally I find the periods of the night immediately prior to dawn as the most productive of all as there is a general stillness and psychic calmness in the atmosphere… I’ve been chilling watching the annual speech of the Chinese premier, Wen Jiabao, live on BBC news. Chinese economy may sound a bit serious, but, luckily for you it isn’t the purpose of the blog. It’s always nice to suddenly change direction so I brewed up a pot of tea and reached for the bookshelf and dug out the book of quotations of Mexican shaman, Don Juan. I’d been saving it for some time. It’s written by his long time pupil, Carlos Casteneda, and is called The Wheel of Time. I’m all webbed up at the mo so I felt obliged to share with you a particularly provocative quote. So here it is…. “Anything is one of a million paths. therefore a warrior must always keep in mind that a path is only a path; if he feels that he should not follow it, he must not stay with it under any conditions. His decision to keep on that path or to leave it must be free of fear or ambition. He must look at every path closely and deliberately. There is a question that a warrior has to ask, mandatorily: Does this path have a heart? All paths are the same: they lead nowhere. However, a path without a heart is never enjoyable. On the other hand, a path with heart is easy – it does not make a warrior work at liking it; it makes for a joyful journey; as long as a man follows it, he is one with it.” For you non-readers who don’t wish to follow up on this literary reference which I would well advise, as Carlos Castaneda is full of revolutionarily zealous thought, here is a link to TV with warriors in http://www.warriorsmovie.co.uk/ Ps. the new Wez G…

A fine weekend of football

Good to see Cardiff City get through to FA Cup semi final…. I thought it was a great weekend for football. Liverpool had yet another comfortable win and it was slightly amusing watching Chelsea and Man U bounce out of the FA Cup. Ok, they both got further than the mighty reds but we always get further in the cup that matters…. We’ll probably end up as the last British team left in the Champions League again as things hot up. We’ll be putting the best side in Europe out next week, and there’s little left to fear in the comp… Vodka at the ready, a trip to Moscow is beckoning… We are starting to show good strength and it seems that the summer signings have finally bedded in. Ok, we’ve had another poor season playing in the league but yet again we’re in the mix at the business end of the season’s main competition… Find me a better player in the world at the moment than Fernando Torres and I’d be surprised. Roll on Europe, and keep the form up, redmen. Big Ears awaits.

Last fm – What a great place to hang out!

I’ve been spending the afternoon chilling on last.fm, listening to some really great music. For those of you that aren’t yet aware, lastfm is the latest craze and is a very futuristic music site. it can be linked to current social networking applications like myspace, facebook and indeed here…. There are lots of interesting features to the site… the main point is that it gets good music to you and is very much consumer orientated as well as being most excellent for artists. If you sign up there please be sure to search for Wez G. One of the interesting features of this revolutionary site is the charts it generates. it scrobbles all the music you play through your computer and then produces charts and generates neighbours with similar tastes. I’ve benn on the site a couple of months now and here is my overall listening chart to date. As you see, i listen to far too much ABBA and Madonna to pass myself off as a credible house music DJ! It can be embarrassing but it’s fun! Just try it out and then I can tell when you’ve been listening to Boyzone…

Rafa’s got his Dirk Kuyt!

Don’t you just love it when we’re completely written off by all the media and opposition fans? I swear, I love it because I know we’ll play really well. half -time Istanbul they all did it. They did it when we were beaten by Burnley a few years ago and we won European Cup. Everyone says sack Rafa and we beat Europe’s best team. Who needs murky saturday afternoons at Barnsley when you can be playing at world’s showcase game in Moscow. Priorities, Priorities. Yeah – sure Mancs and Chavs will prove yet again that they’re better than us at beating Bolton and Blackburn, but we’ll be there when it matters. Cream always rises to the top and Liverpool yet again prove that they’re world beaters…Trust in Rafa. Rafa’s got his Dirk Kuyt!!! YNWA!

Milan Blues

The heyday when this video was taken is long over… Luckily enough, I made it to Istanbul for the Champions League Final in 2005 when Liverpool beat AC Milan in the greatest game of football ever to have been played. It was the best time of my life. For a Liverpool fan , it’s all about winning trophies and they don’t come any bigger than ole big ears… (Read in the facebook group about Hungary for Turkey, my trip to Istanbul http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=8280656361) I am at odds with myself about posting Liverpool stuff in my blog. At the end of the day, whereas I know there are many avid fans out there. , I realise that for the majority of you, you support other clubs and the last thing you wish to read about is Liverpool FC. Anyway, Liverpool play a huge part in my life so I’d be dishonest if I didn’t include the occasional article here in the Wez G blog… Just grin and bear it. It helps hearing about football success from time to time . And your clubs might be able to learn from the greatness of Liverpool. They are, after all, indisputably, the best side in British football. I can just see the grin on Manc faces as they read this. Yes – Last weekend Liverpool lost to lowly Barnsley in the FA Cup. I admit it – we were very poor. Yes – we’re having a bad season. We are still a club in reconstruction. Europe is our only hope this season. And Europe it is tonight. AC Milan’s blue cousins, Inter, are the best side in Europe this season. They are the only side in Europe to still be unbeaten. They strike the fear of God into me. But we have faced adversity before. I just hope that our players produce their A-game tonight. We need the hunger of Stevie G , the ruthlessness of Carragher and the sheer dominance of Fernando Torres. We need the manager to have a clear head. I am a huge fan of Rafa and will never call for his head. NEVER. Not after Istanbul. He can lose to Accrington Stanley every week as far as I’m concerned. Trust in Rafa is the motto. I can, however, see how he’s under pressure and a poor result for Liverpool to night could mean curtains for the gaffer. Since Paco left…

Kosovo – Independence

I’m still unsure exactly what to be doing with my blog… Do I keep it to just music? Or football? Or everything in my life? My idea of a blog is an online diary, somewhere to air your thoughts. I guess sometimes that thinking can be controversial. The blog is new but news happened yesterday and a new European country was ‘created.’ Now gentlemen should never discuss religion or politics and one of my aims in life is to carry the grace of a true English gentleman, a dying breed in today’s morally mixed-up world. but there we go… rules are made to be broken… I wanted to briefly talk about Kosovo as I went to Serbia in 2005 and it made a deep impact on me. I passed through on my way back from Istanbul in 2005 post-champions league final. The full story of that journey can be read here on the facebook group ‘Hungary for Turkey’ http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=8280656361 I met lots of Serbs and they were particularly welcoming. There is a lot of good history between Britain and Serbia apart from the NATO airstrikes during the Yugoslavian conflict in the 1990s. Racially, the Serbs claim to be true Celts which with me being from Wales, lent them an affinity to me… My ideas on the Balkan conflict weren’t clear but I know that in general in the Western press the Serbs come across somewhat as the villains of the piece. Now , all I can say is that there were undoubtedly some serious atrocities committed during and indeed after the whole conflict. It was one of the messiest civil wars in European history. However, all sides committed atrocities. Such, unfortunately , is the nature of war. I read and studied quite a lot on Serbia and can recommend the book by Tim Judah: The Serbs for some decent background knowledge. Regarding Kosovo, I was told stories by many natives during my stay., in particular an Orthodox monk, who sold me some icon cards of the Kosovan monasteries, at Belgrade train station. The Serbian people were saddened by the ongoing international presence in their ‘historical backyard’. Most of Serbia’s precious historical buildings and monuments are located in Kosovo and it is a very important historical area to their proud nation. What happened is that the Ethnic Albanian population living in Kosovo through a higher natural growth rate, became the dominant…
