Review: Moksha: Writings on Psychedelics & the Visionary Experience

Moksha: Writings on Psychedelics & the Visionary Experience by Aldous Huxley My rating: 4 of 5 stars I am a big fan of Aldous Huxley’s work from what I know of this author. A friend in the music business recommended that I try Moksha and I thoroughly appreciated reading it. It is perhaps the logical follow-on read to the infamous ‘Doors of Perception’ as the book covers the period during which Huxley’s great mind was subjected to hallucinogenic drugs. His groundbreaking work with (and indeed coining of the phrase) the hallucinogens, was important for science as a whole. So often drug use can be tainted in today’s society. Huxley demonstrates that he was acting in a responsible fashion and he was exceptionally keen on expanding his consciousness. He saw in the substances he used a visionary future for mankind and Moksha gives us an insight into that world. I found the most enthralling part of this book to be the interspersed personal correspondence between chapters. These letters showed Huxley’s devotion to his cause and gave valuable insight into his personal manners. I felt Moksha to be an intimate portrait of a man with immense brainpower, a true literary shaman and a genius. Huxley’s work should long be remembered and his life celebrated more so than it actually is. I plan to go on to read his novel ‘Island’ next as that has so far eluded me. View all my reviews

Slice The Pie – Get Paid to Review Music…

I found this useful little site the other day. I listen to a lot of music online and where possible I always try to comment and give feedback. At Slice The Pie you get the opportunity to listen to lots of fresh new music, suited to your style and taste. By leaving little reviews on the track after 90s of listening per song, you get paid a small amount of cash. After a couple of hours on there, I’d amassed a nice little sum, perhaps enough for a few pints or MP3s. It’s fun and easy to do and I suggest you check it out. Leave your imprint on the music industry! http://slicethepie.com

Official Wez G website is revamped and relaunched

I spent a hectic three days at the end of last week rebuilding my main website. The old one looked rather dated and was a bit of a nightmare to update. It didn’t perform particularly well SEO wise and was clunky and slow to load. I decided to abandon the use of html and css and transfer the new site to a streamlined wordpress format. I used what data I could from the old site and tried to emphasise my music in the new one, with it heavily drawing from my rather active Soundcloud account. In the new site, photos and videos are available, there is a portfolio section, lots of music, categorised by type (DJ Sets, production, remixes) and genre (house, chillout, drum & bass). I encourage website viewers to participate with me on the social networks, with lots of twitter and facebook boxes and share buttons and also links to the many social networks available. The blog section has allowed me to combine my previous wordpress news blog with my old google blogger one and I might even drag in all the tumblr posts I’ve done too. I plan to post new blogs primarily directly in the site so my other blogs (including this one) are likely to become a bit neglected. Fans of the new website can sign up for updates via email. All in all, I’m satisfied with the work and the new site is looking rather sparkly. I hope you take the time to check it out http://djwezg.com

Punky Funky

Electronic dance music enthusiasts are the modern day punks. Electronic music represents youth culture and the stuff top DJs hammer out in wild night clubs to glammed up audiences is about as punky as it’s gotten since the seventies. Phoenix Rising

The phoenix is a mythical sacred fire bird. It is described as a bird with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends). It has also been described as looking like a giant, firey peacock. It has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self. In some stories, the new phoenix embalms the ashes of its old self in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis (literally “sun-city” in Greek). I feel, with this the biggest break in the podcast, like a phoenix rising from the flames… I’ve been away locked in mental hospitals for the past few months and it hasn’t been fun…. just been keen to get back and get on top of my music…. This mix is a bit rusty but a nice start back with lots of fresh vocals and some flaming hot tunes. 1. My Favorite Robot – The Liability Within (Original Mix) [Last Night On Earth] 2. Tom Demac, Silverclub – Throat Trip (Tiger Stripes Remix) [Cr2 Records] 3. Hot Chip – How Do You Do? (Todd Terje remix) [Domino] 4. Luca C & Brigante – Flash of Light feat. There’s been a bit of a delay in getting this latest mix together as I’ve been busy enhancing the Wez G studio, spending over £4000 on it in the past month… I’ve been learning how to use all the new gadgets and this has sidetracked me from doing DJ mixes… Anyway, back with a bang and this funky mix spans from nice modern disco funk beats through to heavy hitting techno, not forgetting the awesome Justine – Be Sexy from 1992 which I burned from vinyl… I’m hoping my new kit will produce some future bangers for your aural pleasure and I’ll be hard at work, creating… Meanwhile, sink your teeth into ‘Sexy Disco Machines’. 1. Forefathers Of Funk

Well – It’s been a busy week… My new Native Instruments Maschine turned up and I’ve been busy learning that – the aim is to develop my digital DJing to incorporate Maschine eventually and it should certainly revolutionise the Wez G production methods also… Apart from that I’ve been busy researching on ancestry dot com and managed to trace my lineage back to James I of Scotland… It’s an amazing and addictive fun site – well worth a go… Back on Beatport and all the decent tracks were hiding away in the Indie Dance / Nudisco section. My style seems to migrate departments there all the time. We have a variety of funky disco numbers, a shift away from the progginess of the last Alien Abduction mix. I now proudly present to you: Forefathers Of Funk – Enjoy! 1. Leo Perez – Colors (Original Mix) [Half Seas Over] 2. Honom – Sebastians Birthday (Original Mix) [Toolroom Records] 3. Alien Abduction

A few years ago I underwent an Ayahuasca session and was induced into the world of shamanism. It was great except for the plant taking complete control of your body and mind proved a bit daunting around six months later when I had a flashback from my experience and trekked up into the local woods where I had an alien abduction experience. I was surrounding by probing Chinese Red Army soldiers inspecting my body and faced an attack of flying red dragons. I eventually returned intact from the forest, leaving a trail of floating light beings in my wake. As far as alien abudctions go I think that sometimes in today’s music technology world, surrounded by weird bits of kit and flashing lights, the modern DJ is essentially flying a spaceship through the boundaries of the dimensions. I hope that this little mix will trancendentally induce you into the weird and wacky world of Wez G and that you yourselves might experience an enlightening moment or two upon your travels. What I Am

Music is a great tool for expression. The music artist takes you on a journey,a rollercoaster ride of feelings and emotion. Descartes said ‘Cogito Ergo Sum’ – ‘I think, therefore I am’. The musician thinks and then performs and his work, that all can hear, his art, becomes one with the audience. a Transferrance of energy occurs and the form of the art manifests itself in the feelings of those that listen. :::TRACKLISTING::: 1. Circles

Back in my (younger) clubbing days I can remember watching a drug awareness video. They put a load of rats in a box, gave some of them speed which caused them to run around crazily hyperactive. The ones they gave ecstasy also sped up, but ran around the box edges in nice neat continuous circles. The E’d up Rats were following one of the most basic of symmetrical desires. This mix has a nice circular flow to the beats. I’m not equating my audience with rodents, far from it. Enjoy the full force of dance music as its supposed to feel, just remember not to touch any cheese or you might get electroshocked! :::TRACKLISTING::: 1. Ghost In The Bed

Mixing this haunted house made me think of a ghost under the covers with me. Twisted tech with minimal vocals, the mix builds to a crescendo with an old reworked classic, Jaydee – Plastic Dreams, which was one of my Shuffle DJ partner (Damo)’s signature tunes back in the day when we rocked the best of the country’s dancefloors from the tip to the toe of the Uk. :::TRACKLISTING::: 1. Jack Attack

Jacking your body has always been a part of house music and this mix has a few ‘Jack’ references. My own interpretation of the required picture and actual mix name comes from one of my greatest Christmas presents back in the day. Jack Attack was the essential game for the Commodore 64 and as little red Jack you could hop about platforms and squash baddies. What it has to do with house-jacking God only knows… The mix flows about with some nice upfront deep techy tunes, cut up rather rustily due to my break from the decks in recent months, but culminating nicely in some lush hammered-out Inner City Vocals. Enjoy! And have a Merry Christmas! 1. Maceo Plex – Bring It Back (Original Mix) [Crosstown Rebels] 2. Balcazar & Sordo – Black Panties [Dirt Crew Recordings] 3. Joe Goddard – Gabriel feat. Little Disco Biscuit

The best time for dance music in my opinion was the early 1990s. It was the heyday of the Rave Scene and dancefloors were packed with sky high dancing bods. The reason I like this period is not that the floors were filled with ecstasy takers, but that the music was at its peak. Dubby loops of bass and funk with a constant circular rhythm in the tents and clubs drove the E’d up crowd into a frenzy. The beats suited the experience of everyone – It was total unity and I think that over the years as the government has killed off the scene with various parliamentary acts (eg Criminal Justice Act 1994) and the total media frenzied attack on ecstasy, claiming it killed you, and the general shift towards commercialism and business, moved the music towards a different direction. Of course, post 1997 – even the dealers were selling ketamine and calling it ecstasy…It’s as if the disco biscuits disappeared overnight. I think on the music front the DJs forgot the buzz which caused the whole vibe and we saw a scattering of genres and pigeonholing and musical snobbery… Well – a couple of decades on from that and digging about on Beatport, I noticed a trend back towards the old style music. Loops of bass hooks and that driving groove have reappeared. It’s that old Italian sound which is so inspiring. Now most of it seems to be categorised as techno or deep house… but it seems the same old stuff that DJs from Laurent Garnier to Easygroove, from Carl Cox to Sasha, all used to bang out. In this mix I’ve cut up a few old tracks with the new flavours plus slipped in a special edit from a live Universe Rave that took place only a few miles away from me in Magor in South Wales in the summer of 1992… In the news recently there have been claims that Ecstasy cures cancer 100% guaranteed so maybe the pop idol generation will be ditching X-Factor, slipping on their shiny shirts and getting back to a diet of disco biscuits… Who knows? As long as good music thrives and Simon Cowell goes bankrupt I don’t mind one little bit. :::TRACKLISTING::: 1. Vangelis – Blush Response [East West] 2. Joe T Vannelli – Prelude (Scalambrin & Sicily Island Style Remix) [Le Bien Et Le Mal Recordings] 3….

Free The Planet

It’s been a long summer and there’s been a break in my regular mixes. Anyway I’m back with a bang and keen to ‘Free The Planet’. Watching the news here in the UK over the past year or so and I am detecting a disturbing pattern of police brutality and the erosion of our fundamental human rights. George Orwell’s ‘1984’ warns of a ‘Big Brother’ society where every thought is monitored and people punished for the most minor of detours from the authorities’ policies. To me house music represents freedom. The feeling of unity you can only experience in the middle of the dancefloor gives people breath and helps you to evade the oppression of our masters. I don’t want everyone to listen to this and go out smashing the windows in JJB Sports for some new trainers in a violent orgy of looting. Just turn on the speakers, enjoy what (good) summer weather we have left and chill to the sounds of liberty. :::TRACKLISTING::: 1. Tricky – Time To Dance (Maya Jane Coles remix) [Domino] 2. Krust – Warhead (Wez G End Of Terror Remix)

LISTEN TO KRUST – WARHEAD (WEZ G END OF TERROR REMIX) here http://soundcloud.com/wezg/krust-warhead-wez-g-end-of This is for the last ever  remix competition at Back 2 You, the most excellent website whose remix projects I have worked on for the past six months or so… It gives producers who are learning a great opportunity to work with the material of well-established professional producers. Even if half the stuff I churn out is rubbish, these projects are great fun and very educational. The site is moving in a  different direction from now on and it’s a real shame that this Krust – Warhead remix project is their final one. Krust – Well what can you say? Part of Bristol’s Reprazent Crew, Krust is a Drum & Bass superstar. The original Warhead, when it was first released in 1997, was a masterpiece of its genre. The bassline of the original is hard to match. The rawness, the wah wobble, the flow of the music – when you have worked on a remix, you really do start to appreciate these qualities in the original. My remix is packed full of different elements, including a cheeky Presidential sample… One of the samples in the remix pack had something that sounds to me like it’s saying ‘Mr President‘ so I was drawn to the idea of using the topical Obama sample. Also – it seems to conclude the business first launched by Wez G with his http://talibanhouse.com . I had fun working on this and hope that people will appreciate my efforts. With the app being launched yesterday I thought I’d shed some light on why this 4 part ‘Desperate Houseflies’ documentary is included in the video section. Well – I’m jointpop’s manager. They are part of the http://shuffleartistmanagement.com project. It’s not all house music with Wez G and jointpop and I sort of fell into each other’s hands. I dig a bit of Rock n Roll with The Doors being my favourite alltime band… Anyway – jointpop is all about Rock, Trini style… There is something magical about this band…. Just check out their stuff – support them – get some albums on itunes or amazon, whatever….   This 4 part video is well worth watching if you are into music of any genre… Just watch it… The Caribbean atmosphere, the adventure of recording an album… the Rock n Roll feeling encapsulated by the band interacting on their sonic journey… This video shows why I want to be involved with jointpop. They are dedicated to music, their cause. They have a passion about music that only serious artists truly understand.  Watch and Enjoy! (Source: http://www.youtube.com/)
