In 2001 I set up a permanent Shuffle DJ Academy business and a base for my DJing and Promoting in Caldicot, on the Industrial Estate, hiring a 300 sq foot office space / warehouse from Monmouthshire County Council. With regular gigs running preclub bar in Cast, Bristol fro the big Scream event and attached work, I had plenty of DJing to get on with. The bulk of the work I was doing was via Arts Council Wales for Newport Arts Council and Monmouthshire Youth Services. I was mainly out on the road in youth clubs and community centres teaching adults, children, the disabled, homeless, deaf children, Council workers, Duke Of Edinburgh Award scheme youngsters, youth offenders and the general public. I was also printing and designing flyers for a variety of businesses and retailing DJ equipment. I was recruited to run a big Community Festival in Duffryn, Newport, a poverty-stricken community. Also, I did voluntary work running Arts workshops for the Disabled in YMCA, Pillgwenlly. As the business expanded I was dabbling more and more in the web for future music and work and also attending studio production courses at Immtech in Cardiff under the tutelage of Lenny from The Nightcrawlers. I had plans to move down to Cardiff with the business after being offered free office space in Cardiff Bay by PROMO CYMRU. I had various guest DJ gigs on and launched a series of 3 large club events across Cardiff (Emporium), Bristol (The Level) and London – The Clinic, Chinatown. I was going to industry events such as PLASA in London and networking well and developing good professional business. The Mental Services had agreed that I would be permanently taken off their books. I received support from The Prince’s Trust Charity and had an advisor from them assisting me. Gwent Police, who I was working alpngside in certain events such as Duffryn Community Festival were, however, continuing their ongoing 24 year investigation into my business, which had started when I first launched events as a DJ / Promoter back in 1995. I turned the company into a LTD venture due to the enhanced tax incentives introduced by Labour Government and Shuffle Promotions LTD was born. I couldn’t get professional music insurance and contents insurance for my office. I slept in the office at times to protect equipment and as I was working 20 hour days 7 days a…

¡Disfrutar! Narcocorridos are Mexican and Latino American folk ballads that tell tales of the bandits that work in the drug trafficking industry. From smugglers to capos, these fun-filled adventures are recanted, in a flowing, vibrant style and are extremely popular in the parts of the world from which they hail. Here, I, an English gringo electronic music DJ, have produced the second of a series of shows dedicated to this exciting foreign music style. Enjoy!
Last year in January / February 2019, I was placed under section 3 of the Mental Health Act and detained and treated against consent at St Cadoc’s Hospital for about four months. I had spent the evening doing a re-edit of this drum and bass track: Wez G – Signal Groove. I had met a nice Iranian Jungle producer and DJ at Fabric in London for the Metalheadz Christmas Party event with Fabio, Grooverider and Doc Scott and this new friend had expressed an interest in signing Signal Groove to a decent Drum and Bass label. I just needed to rework it slightly and get it mastered. Gwent Police turned up at end of studio session prior to me being able to save the new edited files. I ripped up a great new version. They handcuffed me and banged in the van and dragged me off and then at the hospital threatened to shoot me next time they see me in public about which I have a current IPCC complaint going on. I lost my court appeal case and the Indian / Pakistani psychiatrist Dr Megheri, who treated me believed whole thing was a ‘Delusion of Grandeur’ Obviously there is now a delay on this project but I will rework the track again and hopefully the business offer will still be on the table and it can be put out there to the dancefloors where it belongs. Whilst planning to do a university translation dissertation on some aspect of narcoculture I was drawn to this work (in English – also simultaneously released bilingually with a Spanish version) by American author and folk musician, Elijah Wald. Having been introduced and hooked on the sounds of Los Tigres Del Norte for years, the Narcocorrido is a music form that particularly interests me. The Spanish word ‘Correr’ = to run, gives way to the Corrido form of music, a Mexican musical ballad, originally historically done as the spoken word, but more recently with Mexican folk music of accordions, guitars and harps added. It is a form of Norteño / Ranchera / Mariachi music, very spicy in rhythm, with neatly rhyming lyrics, telling a popular story. A lively, popular music artform, where masculinity and hyper-masculinity can flourish. The traditional Corrido has been superseded by the Narcocorrido, which tells the stories of Mexican and Latin American drug lords and their conquests – their crossborder trafficking, their grisly assassinations, their lovelife, their organisations. The Corrido is an alternative form of news and corridistas may cover any political event, with some controversial writers documenting political scandals and guerrilla uprisings. Elijah Wald takes us on an interesting personal journey as he hitchhikes and buses across every conceivable region in Mexico and also dips into the Corrido communities of North America. We meet the stars of the genre, the well known celebrity figures, from Los Tigres Del Norte themselves and their most famous writers such as Jefe del Jefes, Teodoro Bello. The issues of assassinated star Chalino Sánchez were particularly interesting and displayed the true dangerous nature of these musicians and their controversial cultural work. We head from the Sinaloan narcocorrido heartland, up to Texas and onto rural Michoacan. Not only do we learn more of the drug trafficking inspirations and the gruesome Mexican drug war, but also we learn of other areas of Mexican culture, history and politics. Wald is a man of the people and the rural campesinos are never far from his heart. He is equally at home listening to corridista buskers on the bus aswell as being able to snort cocaine whilst partying with the stars. For me, the translations done by the author about the often unknown corridos are a true revelation and, being an apprentice translator, I particularly found this aspect of the book exciting. The book is a real…
